in hopes of ending the civil war in syria. secretary of state hillary clinton met yesterday with russia's foreign minister and a united nations mediator in ireland. there's a new sense of urgency because assad's regime appears to be getting desperate. >> we remain very concerned, very concerned that as the opposition advanced, in particular on damascus that the regime might very well consider the use of chemical weapons. >> in washington, arizona senator john mccain said the u.s. should consider all options to prevent chemical attacks in syria including military intervention. as for the crisis in cairo, the white house says president obama has called egyptian president mohammed morsi to express concerns about the deaths and injuries of protesters there. morsi's supporters have been clashing with his opponents who have been protesting for a couple of weeks now. they're upset that morsi gave himself sweeping powers that place him above judicial oversight. this is a live picture outside in cairo. you can see that the tents are still up there and a lot of people congregating o on the street

. in syria, the u.n. envoy to syria met with president bashar al-assad in damascus, but he gave no sign of progress toward halting the civil war. lakhdar brahimi spoke with assad as part of a two-day visit. brahimi was appointed envoy in september, but he's made little apparent headway. the latest visit came a day after opposition groups reported a government air strike on a bakery killed at least 60 people. authorities in india restricted vehicle and railroad travel in new delhi today, in the wake of violent protes over a gang rape. on sunday, police sprayed tear gas and water cannons after crowds began throwing stones and tipping over vehicles. the protesters demanded stronger punishments for crimes against women after a 23-year old woman was attacked on a public bus last week. the victim was thrown from the bus afterward. she remains in critical condition. six arrests have been made. washington was quiet today with the president and congress gone for christmas. but the lack of any fiscal cliff talks worried wall street. the dow jones industrial average lost more than 51 points to clo

. a large explosion happened outside the interior ministry in damascus syria. according to syrian state television they claim the ministry was the target. this is video showing the damage of the ministry building. stadia saying it was a result of a car bomb that killed and wounded an unspecified number of people. the opposition local coordination committees of syria said government warplanes struck at targets in the suburbs of the baskets as rebels and government forces clashed nationwide. >> the rain has largely come to an end and we're seeing mostly clear skies for the bay area. a live look at the san mateo bridge and you can see the cloud cover in the distance. we have a chance of a couple of isolated showers out there. you can see the spotty cloud pattern near the coast line. this is where we're seeing cloud cover right now. this will continue into the later evening hours. it could still pick up a spotty showers are too near the coast. near tahoe we are seeing snow winding down now. it will continue for a couple more hours but is expected to taper off into tomorrow. the storm brough
